Randolph school supply drive under way

Local businesses are gearing up to make sure they do their part to support students in need at local schools.
The Archdale-Trinity Chamber of Commerce is teaming up with Communities In Schools to help provide school supplies for children in need. Other organizations that are joining the cause include the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber, Liberty Chamber, Randleman Chamber, Randolph County Schools and Asheboro City Schools.
“This is a the second time that we have done this, and it is a project of our Education Committee. The project was developed when it was brought to our attention that there is a lot of activity around the beginning of the year to equip kids with what they need. By the middle of the year, a lot of those supplies are depleted,” said Beverly Nelson, chamber president. “We felt that business might want to step up and assist in handling that need. Our businesses are very generous, especially when it comes to children and educational needs. They seem to welcome us bringing that to their attention and getting the chance to give back to the community.”
Supplies will be collected Jan. 7 through Feb. 1. The goal of the campaign is to gather enough supplies to ensure the needs of the children are met through the end of the current school year.
“We get a lot of donations for students at the first of the year and a lot of those get used up,” said Sandi Norman, executive director for CIS. “Kids are always needing supplies in the middle of the year. A lot of the teachers have to dig into their own pockets to get them. It becomes very important to provide those students with supplies so that they can be on an even playing field with their peers.”
Chambers are requesting that businesses ask their employees to brings as many items that the can. At the end of the campaign, the chamber will arrange for the pick-up of the school supplies from the businesses. There will also be public drop-off sites throughout the community.
All supplies collected will remain in the Archdale Trinity area and will be divided up among social workers and guidance counselors.
