Pistols permits go online

Residents have a new way to apply for pistol permits.
The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office will offer an online pistol permit service. The online system, in conjunction with Advanced Imagining Systems and Permitium, will allow residents to apply for permits and pay for them online with their debt or credit card. The system does not include concealed carry permits.
With the current system, residents are required to go to one of the district offices or the downtown office in Greensboro or High Point to complete an application. The new system will allow them to fill it out and pay for it anywhere that they have an Internet connection.
“We think this will make things faster for the public and us,” said. Col. Randy Powers. “This saves residents time from driving down town, coming in and not know if the permit is in or not.”
Pistol permits are $5 for each permit issued. Under the new system, there is a convenience fee of $3 that is added to the cost of the permit, and there may be a transaction fee charged by the credit card provider.
After the application is submitted, residents will receive email updates on the progress of the application and be notified when their permit is available for pickup.
“They will be emailed when the permit is ready so it saves them time,” Powers said.
Residents have to come to the Sheriff’s Office to pick up the pistol permits that were applied for.
“You have to come to the office and pick it up in person. That keeps someone from snagging a permit that should not get and allows us to verify identification,” Powers said.
To access the system, go to the Guilford County sheriff’s website at www.guilfordcountysheriff.com and follow the prompts to pistol permits.
