Former Randleman resident wins $1 million on 'The Amazing Race'
Brent Ridge just became the most famous race-winner not named Petty to come out of the tiny town of Randleman.
Ridge, who grew up in Randleman but now lives in Sharon Springs, N.Y., won Sunday night’s finale of “The Amazing Race,” a long-running reality series on CBS. He and his partner, Josh Kilmer-Purcell, defeated 10 other teams to win the $1 million first prize.
“I can still hardly believe it,” Ridge said by phone Monday afternoon. “This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, and it still feels unreal.”
Ridge was born at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro and grew up in Randleman, the same town that gave us NASCAR legends Lee and Richard Petty. He graduated from Randleman High School in 1991.
“When I was growing up in the small town of Randleman, exploring the world was really only something you would dream about, and even though I’ve come a long way from there, I never question the fact that everything I’ve accomplished in life started right there,” Ridge said.
“The Amazing Race” pits 11 teams, each comprised of two members, against each other on a trek around the world for approximately 25 days. At every destination, each team must compete in a series of challenges, some mental and some physical, and only when the tasks are completed will they learn of their next location. Teams who are the farthest behind are gradually eliminated as the contest progresses, with the first team to arrive at the final destination winning $1 million.
Ridge and Kilmer-Purcell competed as “Team Beekman,” a name that stems from their former reality TV series, “The Fabulous Beekman Boys,” on the Planet Green network. That show chronicled the two men’s efforts to operate a goat farm and launch a line of products related to the farm. They sell cheese, soap and skin-care products under the brand name Beekman 1802.
The 21st season of “The Amazing Race” took contestants across the world in a battle against the clock and each other — from China to Indonesia, Bangladesh to Turkey, Russia to the Netherlands. The finale aired Sunday night.
