Name change questioned for new magnet school

Two High Point leaders are not sure why Guilford County Schools officials are seeking name suggestions for the new magnet middle school planned for the vacant Allen Jay Middle School campus.
Although Allen Jay has been the campus name for decades, the school board could give it another name when the school  reopens with the new program.
“I don’t see a reason to change the name,” said Mayor Bernita Sims. “That name has been around a long time and is part of the community. If this were a new building, that would be different. I just don’t have enough information now about why they may want to do this.”
The vacant campus and a nearby elementary school are named for a Quaker minister and evangelist. The middle school was last used in August 2009, when it housed students from the old Union Hill Elementary School while a new Union Hill building was being built.
“Allen Jay is the way people have referred to the school,” said Becky Smothers, at-large City Council member. “It’s hard to know what the school board might do with the name.”
The campus is scheduled for $12 million in renovations for use as a small “advantage” middle school with special programs and a longer school day and year. The project does not include the historic rock gym which recently was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized  the gym through the Work Projects Administration in 1939. A conference center is planned for the gym, but school officials have yet to approve a renovation design and budget.
