Jean drive gets a leg up on poverty
A local teen is giving back to her community by collecting as much denim as she can.
Sage Earnhardt, a sophomore at Trinity High School, is participating in the “Teens for Jeans” drive sponsored by Aeropostale. The purpose of the campaign is to collect jeans, give them to the closest Aeropostale store and the store will donate the jeans to local homeless shelters.
“They said that the one thing teens request most in jeans, so I thought that I would collect jeans. I thought it would be a good way to give back to the community. I have been really blessed, and I thought it would be good if I just helped give back,” Earnhardt said. “For some people, money comes hard for them, so I thought it would be good if I could help others.”
The 16-year-old girls’ basketball shooting guard hopes to collect at least 300 jeans. So far, she has collected a little more than 100.
“We still have more coming in. I have had a lot of people tell me that they have some for me and they have to bring them in. Everyone has at least one pair of jeans that you do not wear,” Earnhardt said. “We will take the jeans to Aeropostale, and they are going to take them out to the various homeless shelters.”
The closest Aeropostale is located inside Oak Hollow Mall in High Point.
There is a bonus for Earnhardt if she collects the most jeans, in the form of $10,000. Earnhardt said the money could go to use around Trinity High. Earnhardt would have to tell Aeropostale exactly how many jeans she collected.
“The school that raises the most gets $10,000, and if we got that, it would help us out a lot,” Earnhardt said.
Earnhardt said she is excited about the clothing drive.
“We have had a good turnout with the jeans. I didn’t really know what to expect, but we have actually had a pretty good number,” Earnhardt said. “Most of my peers have really helped out, and they really think that it is a really good idea. My friends have really brought in a lot.”
