Agency opens Women’s Center for Excellence
West End Ministries is offering women a place to learn, unwind or just focus on being a woman.
The Women’s Center for Excellence opened its doors recently on the second floor of the agency at 903 W. English Road. The center, started by Karen Erickson, is designed to cater to women and their needs.
“I have been facilitating the life skills classes for the women of Leslie’s House. I wanted to expand the opportunities and resources to the women in the community,” Erickson said. “This is a center where women can come in and enjoy a cup of coffee, conversations with other women and get information on employment. Their is a variety of opportunities for them.”
The goal of the center is to provide the women in the community an opportunity to engage in arts and crafts, Bible studies, girl talk, home study course and various workshops on topics related to women.
“It’s just an inviting place for women to come and just be a woman,” Erickson said. “They can come paint their nails and relax, to learning more about skills and taking care of a home. We have had wonderful feedback. The women are excited about it and are eager to participate in the workshops.”
The center is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Chris Gillespie, the agency’s executive director, said the center allows the agency to help the total woman.
“This center focuses on things that are not normally addressed in life skill classes, such as etiquette, healthy relationships and planting. So often we are focused on the jobs skills, hygiene and money management, but we want them to know that there is more out there than paying bills and working.”
Gillespie said that program is an asset to the agency because it impacts the community.
“Any program that benefits the community is an asset to the agency. This allows those in the west end to take advantage of these resources in the area,” Gillespie said.
