Cumby Family Funeral Service, one of the High Point area’s longest-running funeral homes founded shortly after the end of World War II, was purchased Tuesday by a Houston-based funeral home and cemetery company.
Carriage Services Inc. announced it has purchased the Cumby funeral homes in High Point and Archdale. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed Tuesday.
“The acquisition of the Cumby business is an excellent fit with our acquisition growth strategy ...,” said Mel Payne, chairman and chief executive officer of Carriage Services. “North Carolina is a traditional market, and our goal is that this acquisition represents the first of many in this attractive region.”
Founded in 1948, Cumby Family Funeral Services assists almost 700 families annually and is one of the larger funeral homes in the High Point area. The funeral home, a family business since its inception, now is operated by James Cumby and his sons, Andrew and Michael Cumby.
Carriage Services announced that the Cumby family management will remain under the new ownership. Andrew Cumby will become managing partner, James Cumby will be a funeral director and Michael Cumby will assist with the “management’s integration of the business,” Carriage Services indicates.
“The wonderful thing about this partnership is that nothing changes. All employees will be here,” James Cumby said. “I’ll still be doing the day-to-day operations and making the day-to-day decisions. I was here yesterday. I’m here today. I’ll be here tomorrow.”
Carriage Services’ has a commitment to decentralized operations that will allow Cumby Family Funeral Service to benefit from the partnership while maintaining local connections, the Cumby family said in a statement to The High Point Enterprise.
Carriage Services, one of the nation’s largest funeral home and cemetery companies, operates 165 funeral homes in 26 states and 33 cemeteries in 12 states. The company’s stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol CSV.
Carriage Services’ other properties in North Carolina include Watson-King Funeral Home and Richmond County Memorial Park cemetery in the city of Rockingham and Watson-King Chapel in the town of Hamlet, according to the company’s website. Carriage Services also owns several funeral homes in southern Virginia.
