High Point man shot; suspect sought
High Point police are sorting through conflicting information and searching for a suspect in a Thursday shooting that sent one man to the hospital, officials said.
Officers responded about 1:05 a.m. Thursday to the 800 block of Hendrix Street in reference to an assault with a gun, according to an incident report.
Upon arrival on scene, officers found a 21-year-old High Point man suffering a gunshot wound to his lower extremities, police Capt. Mike Kirk said Friday. His injuries were not life-threatening, Kirk said.
The victim was transported by EMS to High Point Regional Health for treatment. He then was transferred to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. The man was not listed in the hospital directory there, and his condition was not available.
Police determined the victim was in the backseat of a vehicle when a suspect in another car fired at him with a handgun, Kirk said. A 23-year-old man also was in the vehicle with the victim but was uninjured.
Kirk said investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an interaction between the victim and suspect and was not a random act. The 21-year-old man appears to have been the target, he said.
Witnesses said the suspect fired from a silver or champagne-colored sedan, Kirk said. Some said it was a Dodge; some said it was a Chevrolet.
The conflicting information was “not enough to be definitive,” Kirk said, but he is asking anyone who may have seen a silver or champagne-colored sedan leave the area to come forward.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call High Point Crimestoppers at 889-4000.
