Leaders of a new regional college preparatory public charter school have purchased 50 acres of land for a building site.
Construction will begin in February at 9300 Payne Road in Kernersville for the North Carolina Leadership Academy. The property is near the High Point city limits.
School leaders plan a Fall 2013 opening.
“We were very excited to find this property and it fit the requirements that we had,” said Sam Cook, a member of the board of trustees. “We have a lot of room to grow.”
The leadership academy will open as a K-9 school in August and add grades 10, 11, and 12 later.  School leaders will build another building for middle and high school students in a few years, Cook said.
School leaders want to enroll as many as 400 students.
“We are very excited about this location, said Principal Dottie Heath. “Not only is it large enough to provide us with athletic and playing fields, but it will allow for future school expansions to meet enrollment growth.”
NCLA, a tuition‐free public charter school, accepts applications from parents in Forsyth, Guilford, Rockingham, Stokes, and Yadkin counties.
NCLA will offer a college preparatory curriculum with a focus on leadership and civic engagement, said Frederick J. Kennedy, trustees chairman, so that 100 percent of the school’s students will be accepted to college.
NCLA is designed to provide students the opportunity to develop true leadership qualities, according to leaders, and to become creative thinkers and problem solvers while retaining a sense of responsibility for their families, their community, and their country. Other programs include a Civil Air Patrol program to assist students with their leadership curriculum.
