A simple trip to the convenience store cost a man his life Tuesday afternoon.
Johnny Floyd, 49, of the 200 block of Willowood Drive, was killed around 2 p.m. Tuesday while walking home from the BP gas station on Greensboro Road.
Floyd and his wife had recently moved here from New York and he had a birthday coming up soon. She walked up to the scene, where she collapsed in grief on the side of the road after being told that her husband was dead.
Police escorted her into an unmarked car, where the police chaplain stayed by her side.
Floyd, who went to buy cigarettes from the store, was struck from behind by a minivan that was driving east on Greensboro Road. The driver of the minivan drove off the right side of the road into a ditch, struck Floyd, then pulled back onto the roadway, according to an investigation by High Point Police Traffic Unit.
The driver then crossed the center line, in the lane of westbound traffic, before being hit by another driver.
“The minivan was coming eastbound, went off the road and rode the ditch down before clipping a mailbox and hitting the pedestrian,” said Lt. B. Roberts. “He then swerved across all lanes and started to roll over before being hit by oncoming traffic.”
The drivers of both vehicles were taken to High Point Regional Hospital and admitted, according to police.
The investigation shut down Greensboro Road from Enterprise Drive to Dogwood Circle for two and half hours. | 888-3657
