Jail escapees remain at large
Deputies with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office are still looking for two men who escaped the High Point jail.
Jose Alberto Hernandez, 35, and Jose Idel Sid, 36, are still on the run a week after they were reported missing from a fourth-floor jail cell.
Col. Randy Powers said the sheriff’s office is following up on all leads and, though people are reluctant at first, they are opening up once they hear about the $5,000 reward.
“When people hear that there is $5,000 involved, they become interested in helping. The money is definitely helping us,” Powers said. “We are definitely getting information, trying to follow up, and are not leaving anything unturned.”
Powers said deputies have been searching several areas where they believe the suspects may turn up.
“We are doing things in the areas that we think they may be popping up in and working those areas,” Powers said.
The cellmates’ escape reads like a movie, with the men stuffing their bedding under blankets to give the illusion that they were in their beds, before climbing through a 15-by-13 hole in the prison Plexiglas window by using pieces of metal taken from the ceiling vent in their cell. The men popped the rivets that were in the Plexiglas and replaced them with toothpaste so that it would appear that they were still secure.
The men then cut through the Plexiglas and the metal that separated them from freedom. Once through, they used tied sheets to shimmy down the 30-foot wall to the building’s ledge. Then they jumped another 14 feet to the ground below.
Earlier this week during a press conference, Sheriff B.J. Barnes offered the reward for information that leads to the capture of the two men. He also stated the escape was due to structural and human errors. The inmates used a clever facade to hide the work from officers who were doing visual checks of the cell, and apparently planned work time around the jail’s noise level, according to a press release.
Hernandez is 5 feet 6 inches tall and 130 pounds. He is charged with first degree sex offense with a child and six counts of indecent liberties with a child. Sid, also known as Jose Joaquin-Del Cid Sosa, is 5 feet and 5 inches tall and 145 pounds. He has a tattoo on right arm that reads “AMOR”. He was in custody for indecent liberties with a child and an immigration violation detention.
Anyone with information is asked to call Col. Randy Powers at (336) 508-8834.
