Kao plans expansion, new jobs
A south High Point specialty chemical manufacturer plans to expand its operations.
Kao Specialties Americas LLC plans to add six jobs to its work force of about 150 in an expansion of the capacity of its Toner Binder plant on Woodbine Street.
Toner binder is a polyester resin that is a major component in the production of black and color toners used in copiers and printers.
"It is impressive that Kao has the need to expand its capacity to handle increased global demand for its products, and it is good news that the company has the confidence that High Point is where that expansion should take place," said Loren Hill, president of the High Point Economic Development Corp.
The company expects to open the 7,000-square-foot expansion in the third quarter of next year.
Kao Specialties Americas LLC, a subsidiary of Kao Corporation Japan, manufactures specialty chemical products to meet the various needs of industry.
Kao supplies toner binder globally from its plants in the U.S., Spain and Japan. The High Point expansion will increase local capacity by 30 percent to support growing demand in North America as well as the rest of the world.
The company, which is High Point’s 18th largest taxpayer, underwent expansions in 2005 and 2010, according to the EDC.
The Kao Group comprises three consumer products businesses: beauty care, human health care and fabric and home care. It also includes the chemical business, which provides chemical products to various industries.
