Teenager dies in single-car accident early Tuesday
A teenager from the High Point portion of Davidson County died early Tuesday from a single-car accident along Wallburg-High Point Road after he apparently lost control of his vehicle.
Michael John Lyles died at High Point Regional Hospital about two hours after the crash happened at 2:30 a.m., said State Highway Patrol Sgt. G.R. Catherwood. The accident happened on Wallburg-High Point Road between Browntown and Curry roads in the northeastern tip of Davidson County.
Lyles was driving east on Wallburg-High Point Road when his vehicle ran off the right shoulder, Catherwood said. Lyles appeared to have overcorrected to get back on the roadway, then went left of center before going off the left side of the road. The car crashed, striking several trees. Lyles, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle, Catherwood said.
Excessive speed appears to be a factor. Catherwood said troopers estimate that the vehicle was going 70 mph on a roadway with a posted speed limit of 55 mph.
