High Point police are investigating the death of a 3-year-old who was mauled by the family dog Monday evening.
The dog attacked the child at the home on Big Creek Court at 5:02 p.m. There were no other children in the home at the time of the attack.
A member of the toddler’s family drove the child to High Point Regional Hospital.
“Officers went there first and went to the house later,” said Lt. Kevin Ray.
Police are not releasing the victim’s name out of respect to the family, according to the police report.
“There were traumatic injuries to the abdomen,” Ray said.
The dog, a pit bull terrier, was transported to the Guilford County animal shelter, where it is being held in quarantine. On Tuesday, it was lying on the concrete slab of the kennel. It appeared timid.
“The dog will be put down and the investigation into the incident is still continuing,” he said.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs each year, and half of these are children. Among children, the rate of dog bite-related injuries is highest for those ages 5 to 9 years, and children are more likely than adults to receive medical attention for dog bites.
