Report: Murder victim had drugs in system
A High Point man had cocaine and alcohol in his system when he was killed, according to a toxicology report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Shawn Dale Heath, 33, was shot on Aug. 14, 2012, and died from a gunshot wound to his left chest. The incident happened in the 2700 block of English Road following an argument between Heath and someone he was working with, Christopher Nicholas Lafortuna.
High Point police investigators determined that Heath was part of a crew working with Lafortuna inside an English Road business.
Heath and Lafortuna went outside and got into an altercation in the parking lot “regarding a woman they were both seeing,” according to the medical examiner’s report.
Lafortuna, 43, of Hillside Drive in High Point, called 911 to report the shooting and was arrested at the scene. He was charged with murder and possession of cocaine and jailed under a $500,000 bond. He was released Nov. 29, 2012, after posting bond.
Capt. Mike Kirk, public information officer with the High Point Police Department, said Lafortuna is still awaiting trial.
“There has not been a final disposition for him as yet,” Kirk said. “It is just a matter of going to trial and, if he pleads, what he gets.”
