Business park announcement expected next month
A much-anticipated announcement about a major economic development project for High Point is expected this spring.
Developer Robin Team, president of Carolina Investment Properties, said he hopes soon to unveil the name of the first tenant in a planned corporate park at Interstate 74 and N.C. 66.
“We expect we will be in place to announce something by mid-April,” Team said.
Team has declined to name the prospect, which is expected to locate on the park’s first phase of about 100 acres.
City documents state that a 1.2-million-square-foot warehouse and distribution facility is planned for the site. Speculation has centered on Ralph Lauren Corp. as the likely occupant.
Team has represented the company in past expansions in High Point, where it operates several facilities. He has called Ralph Lauren’s High Point operations “their major East Coast distribution location.”
The City Council has authorized spending about $5 million on water and sewer lines to serve the site, which is in Forsyth County, just north of High Point’s limits. The land will be annexed by the city if the project moves ahead.
City Manager Strib Boynton said some preliminary engineering work has been done for the water and sewer infrastructure, but the city won’t award a construction contract until a tenant is announced.
The plan is to have the lines in place by spring 2015.
“This hopefully will be the first of several developments in that corporate park,” Boynton said. “A lot of work has gone into that site. I’ve been working on that site intensely for 10 years. I’m very optimistic there will be an announcement soon that will be great news for High Point and the rest of the Triad.”
The city’s planning and zoning commission has recommended approval of land use and zoning changes requested by Team. The council will consider both cases — a rezoning request for 129 acres within a 438-acre footprint — on March 17.
