More than 50 arrested in Thomasville sting Thursday

Dec. 13, 2012 @ 06:18 PM

It was a cold Thursday morning in Thomasville before law enforcement turned up the heat, awakening sleeping suspected drug dealers. Officers with Thomasville Police Department and state Alcohol Law Enforcement arrested dozens of suspected drug dealers and executed 11 search warrants at locations where police say are known for drug distributions.
Once captured, officers took the suspects to the police station where they processed them on-site, even expanding their offices to include two red and white Thomasville City Schools activity buses in the parking lot. One bus was used for holding those arrested, while the other was used to transport the suspects, hands cuffed behind them, to the county jail in Lexington.
The 10 women and 41 men apprehended walked slowly to the transportation bus as family and friends looked on from the W. Guilford St. sidewalk.
The suspects range in age from those in their teens to a 77-year-old man. Many of those family members and friends packed the TPD lobby filled with questions and concerns for those in custody.
The four-month undercover operation began from numerous complaints from Thomasville residents about drug networks and traffickers in the city, according to police. Drugs including heroin, opium, cocaine, prescription medications and marijuana were being distributed throughout the city, according to reports.
The reports prompted the launch of ALE’s Community Betterment Initiative, a program that identifies communities in the state where residents are being held hostage by drugs, gangs and violence. Agents worked undercover to set up drug transactions with specific dealers.
“We are committed to addressing the needs of neighborhoods and communities with proactive, efficient enforcement strategies,” said John Ledford, ALE director. “No one should ever fear walking outside their own home.”
The operation was a cooperative effort that included Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, University of North Carolina-Greensboro Police Department, Denton Police Department, United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Marshalls Service, N.C. Probation and Parole, N.C. State Revenue, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Enforcement Section and the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office.
“Thanks to the teamwork and partnerships with other law enforcement agencies, dangerous drug dealers are now behind bars,” said Chief Jeff Insley. “Citizens can breathe easier knowing law enforcement is aggressively addressing this criminal element. We will continue to be vigilant in eliminating any further illegal drug activity.”
