Bridges withdraws Trinity candidacy

An incumbent Trinity City Council member withdrew her candidacy for re-election on the same day a challenger filed to run for her seat.
Ward 3 Councilwoman Karen Bridges filed paperwork earlier this week to seek another term in office but withdrew on Friday, according to the Randolph County Board of Elections.
Former Councilman Tyler Earnst on Friday filed to run for Bridges’ seat.
Earnst was elected to council in 2007 and served one term. He opted not to seek re-election in 2011. That year’s election followed a failed referendum that would have allowed alcohol sales in the city. Earnst was a proponent of alcohol sales, arguing that it would help attract businesses to the city.
Through the first week of the candidate filing period for the November election, Earnst and Mayor Carlton Boyles are the only Trinity office-seekers to officially declare their intentions to run.
The other council spots before Trinity voters this fall are the Ward 1 seat held by Kristen Varner, the Ward 2 seat held by Barry Lambeth and the Ward 4 seat held by Tommy Johnson.
The filing period ends July 19.
