Uptowne strolls into 19th century for holidays

Nov. 29, 2012 @ 04:02 PM

Uptowne is ringing in the holidays with a little Dickens.
The Uptowne High Point Association and the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival partnered to present the sights and sounds of Christmas at the 3rd annual Uptowne High Point Holiday Stroll: A Dickens Christmas. The stroll will happen Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Activities will take place in Uptowne on High Point’s North Main Street between Ray and State avenues.
The stroll will include open houses at historic homes, churches and shops, including St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church, the Briles House, the Bernice Bienenstock Furniture Library, the Sherrod House, Millis Square and the J.H. Adams Inn.
Elizabeth Yocum, Uptowne Association chairwoman, said there will be horse-drawn carriage rides $5 per person, visits by Santa Claus and his elves, performances of Christmas music, theater and dance. A full schedule of events can be found below.
“The partnership with the Shakespeare Festival is the main thing that is new and different,” Yocum said. “They’ve made 30 volunteer costumes for people and the actors from A Christmas Carol will be there like last year.”
Yocum said that the partnership has also been good for getting the word out.
“We’ve sent out press releases and done advertise,” she said. “It takes it to a whole new level.”
The Uptowne High Point Association began the free holiday stroll in 2010 to promote shopping and dining in the Uptowne area and to get residents thinking of Uptowne as a destination. NCShakes joined as co-presenter after staff and company members volunteered with the stroll last year. The stroll is also presented with support from the City Project and the High Point Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“There’s something for everybody,” Yocum said. “You can come, shop and spend money or not spend a dime and still have a good time.”
