Students at Ragsdale High School returned from spring break to learn that one of their classmates was dead and another was seriously injured. Rychon Hawkins, 18, was returning from Myrtle Beach Sunday morning when he was killed in a crash on U.S. 501 near Marion, S.C. Troopers say the car he was traveling in ran off the road and hit a tree.
Hawkins’ friend, De’Bryan Brown, 18, is in very serious condition, Ragsdale Principal Kathy Rogers stated in a letter to her staff Sunday.
John Bawa, 17, was also in the vehicle. Rogers stated in her note to the teachers Bawa was hospitalized but she didn’t know his condition.
According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Corporal Sonny Collins, troopers are still investigating. Collins would not say who was in the driver’s seat at the time of the crash.
“We are not releasing the names of the passengers at this time,” Collins said. “The investigation is still open and when we get our questions answered, we will look into charges if anything applies.”
He said the weather at the time of the crash was clear.
Brittany Fuller, a senior at T. Wingate Andrews High, said that the schools and community are taking the news of Hawkins’ death hard. Fuller said that she and Hawkins were close, and that her daughter Liberty often played with Hawkins’ son, R.J.
“It was pretty hard to hear. He was well known in the community and everybody loved him,” Fuller said. “He always had a smile on his face.”
Fuller said that she had plans to see him when he returned.
“It has been a sad couple of days. I was talking to Hawkins on his way back and I was planning on going to see him when he got back from the beach, but sadly that didn’t happen,” Fuller said. “Everybody loved him. I know that God set the time and place for him to go home but I feel like it was too soon.”
Students at both schools posted trending tweets of memories and prayers under #RIPHAWKINS and #PrayForDeBryan. One wrote: “It was a sad day at Ragsdale.” Another wrote: “It’s a sad day when you wake up to find one of your classmates gone forever.”
Members of the district’s crisis team were at Ragsdale on Monday.
