M-A-C-A-D-A-M-I-A spells victory for Ledford Middle School’s Nejat Alkadir after beating out 24 other students in the Davidson County Schools countywide spelling bee Friday.
This will be the eighth-grader’s third time headed to the regional spelling bee, and she is prepared to go all the way.
“I know all of the words, and I have studied them a long time ago for the regionals. I studied a lot of hours every single day,” Nejat said. “The next couple weeks, I will be studying the dictionary a lot.”
Nejat received $100 from Newbridge Bank, a $25 gift certificate from Food Lion and a hardback Collegiate dictionary from Pandora’s bookstore for winning the competition.
This year, the spelling bee was more of a family affair. Nejat’s little brother, Hamza, represented Friendship Elementary in the bee. Alkadir said she was quite nervous for him when he was spelling. They did not study together, but Nejat said she would not have wanted anybody else, except herself, to have won.
“He studied so hard, and I’m proud of him,” Nejat said. “There was a little bit of sibling rivalry. We wanted to go to D.C. together.”
Although this is her last spelling bee, eighth-grader and runner-up London Hayes said she is happy for Nejat and glad that she participated in this year’s event. London received $50 from Newbridge Bank.
“This is pretty exciting, and I am happy for Nejat, too,” London said. “To prepare, I looked over the words that my sixth-grade teacher gave me, and my mom and dad encouraged me to do the best I could.”
Davidson County Schools is excited about Nejat’s win, said Sonja Parks, director of elementary education.
“We know that she is prepared to go to the regional level, as well as moving forward to representing our state,” Parks said. “We certainly wish her the best of luck. She is a great speller.”
Nejat will go on to represent Davidson County Schools at the regional competition on March 24.
