Split vote shows BOC divide

Guilford County commissioners voted 6-3 early Friday to hire Brunswick County Manager Marty Lawing to be the next county manager.
He will start no later than May 6.
Lawing, 52, will receive a base pay of $183,000. He earned $176,000 a year in Brunswick County.

Lawing, who emerged as the leading candidate for the job last week, did not attend the meeting.  The split vote shows a phliosphical and perhaps racial divide among commissioners. The three black commissioners on the board voted against Lawing.

Lawing received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science at Appalachian State University.  He served as city administrator for the South Carolina cities of Bennettsville, Bishopville and Conway before becoming Brunswick County’s manager in 2001.
