Departing commissioners offered farewells and advice for new commissioners during their final meeting.

Billy Yow, retiring Republican, three term veteran.
“Don’t forget where you come from. You are nothing special. People get complacent and forget who they represent.”

Michael Winstead, retiring Republican, two term veteran.
“I’m glad there will be a Republican majority. There will be new ideas coming in.”

Paul Gibson, Democrat who lost his bid for the District 5 seat after eight years as an at-large representative.
“It’s been rewarding work. It has been an honor to serve.”

Skip Alston, retiring Democrat, former chairman, and 20-year veteran. He urged new board members to put partisanship aside for the good of Guilford County.
“This job has not been about us. We have done the best we could for the people. You should put the people first and take politics out of it.”

Kirk Perkins, defeated Democrat, two-term veteran and former chairman.
“The new commissioner for my district will be my commissioner too and I want to wish him the best.”
