Legion hosts vets job fair
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s National Chamber Foundation, the American Legion and other sponsors will host a “Hiring Our Heroes” job fair Thursday for veterans and military spouses.
More than 20 employers are expected to participate with jobs available for veterans and military spouses of all ranks and levels of experience. Companies range from America’s biggest employers to dozens of small companies from the region.
One leading employer of veterans is Combined Insurance. CI was recently ranked eighth on G.I. Jobs magazine’s 2013 Military Friendly Employer list. The annual list is made up of 100 companies that represent the top 2 percent of more than 5,000 eligible companies whose annual revenues exceed $500 million. Since 2010, CI has helped more than 500 veterans find jobs, and the company has committed to hiring 1,000 vets.
“We have found that military veterans can make great employees — especially for our industry,” said Joseph Pennington, a U.S. Navy retiree, and military recruiting coordinator for CI. “They are responsible, hard-working, disciplined and dedicated to helping others.”
Since its launch in March 2011, Hiring Our Heroes has held more than 420 hiring fairs nationwide, which has helped more than 14,000 veterans and military spouses find employment. The goal is hiring 500,000 veterans and military spouses by the end of 2014. So far, more than 800 businesses of all sizes have pledged to hire 211,000 heroes toward this goal, with 93,000 hired since March 2012.
