A former employee of Davidson County Schools was charged with theft after public funds were used to secure gift cards at a supermarket without permission of the school system.

Meredith Bame was arrested and charged with five counts of obtaining property by false pretense, according to the Sheriff’s Office. She was released on a $25,000 unsecured bond and is to appear in District Court in Lexington on Feb. 25.
Last November, human resources personnel with Davidson County Schools reported to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office that a former employee had obtained money on gift cards at several Food Lion stores without authorization.
After an investigation was conducted, investigators determined that a school employee had obtained more than $10,000 at five different Food Lion stores on gift cards using money from a Davidson County Schools account, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The incidents occurred a number of times between June and November of last year when the suspect was an employee of the school system.
