Giving back through faith

Parents and children in need will have the chance Saturday to pick up basic school supplies and other staples for free as a pair of High Point area churches act on their faith to help others.

Connection Church of Wallburg and Laurel Oak Christian Church of High Point will hold separate giveaways starting Saturday morning through early afternoon.
Connection Church, which will stage its event called the Big Give at Ledford High School, will provide free merchandise on a first come, first served basis, said church Outreach Director Brent McDowell. The Big Give takes place from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the school in northeast Davidson County at 140 Jesse Green Road.
This marks the second year Connection Church has organized the Big Give. Last year the outreach benefited more than 1,500 people, and church volunteers expect a greater turnout on Saturday.
“This endeavor isn’t just about the folks that come to our church — it’s much bigger than that,” said Lead Pastor Scott Newton.  “We invite all churches, businesses, community leaders and caring residents of our area to join us in sharing the blessings they have with those that are less fortunate. It’s really about connecting people in need with people that can give.”
Last year, Connection Church and its supporters gave out 750 new book bags with school supplies, more than 4,000 cans of food and one semi-truckload of goods such as clothing, toys, diapers, wipes, formula and other baby items.
Parents who want to collect free backpacks for their children will need to have their children with them at the high school to receive them, McDowell told The High Point Enterprise.
Meanwhile, Laurel Oak Christian Church will hold its Back to School Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church at 1001 Old Plank Road in northwest High Point. Free supplies will be given out as materials last, according to the church.
The items to be distributed at Laurel Oak Christian Church include backpacks, school supplies and children’s clothes. The fair also will include haircuts for boys and girls and information about schools and the community.
“We’ll have a number of representatives of community and city services who will be here, such as the police, firefighters and High Point Regional Hospital,” said Pastor Allen Brown.
