Silver Valley Civitan Club gears up for Santa Project

Santa once again will be getting an extra pair of hands to help this holiday season.
The Silver Valley Civitan Club is gearing up for its 46th annual Project Santa. The special elves already have made their way through the community collecting names of local households for Santa to pay close attention to this year.
The club has begun visiting and preparing to serve about 100 households this year.
“This is a project where we provided Christmas for families who would not be able to provide Christmas for their children,” said Sara Barker, club president. “There are some families where we take food into the homes along with the gifts. We also take the widows and widowers in the community fruit bags.”
Barker, who grew up in the community, said it is a yearlong effort to get the funding for project. The smiles on the children’s faces make all the hard work worth it at the end of the year, she said.
“It really is a blessing to do this for the families. There are families that if we did not go in and provide for them, some of them would not have Christmas,” Barker said. “When we go out and deliver with Santa, you see the children glow. We can see how much this means to the families and the children.”
The organization’s annual shopping trip is scheduled for Monday. Fruit bags and food boxes will be assembled Sunday, Dec. 23. Project Santa will make deliveries on Christmas eve beginning at 8 a.m.
