Sheriff to change permit times
Davidson County residents soon will have fewer available times to apply for concealed carry weapons or pistol permits.
The permitting office, located in the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office in Lexington, normally is open during daytime hours for those who wish to apply, with some openings in the evening to accommodate those who can not make it during regular business hours.
Beginning June 1, the sheriff’s office will designate Tuesday evenings only, between 5 and 8 p.m., to accommodate residents who can not make it during business hours.
“We had a phenomenal demand when I took office in 2004,” said Sheriff David Grice. “We are now getting caught up, so there is no need for as many nights. It takes a while to process these applications and do what you’re supposed to before sending them off to the state bureau.”
According to the sheriff’s office, the changes are due to a decrease in demand for the permits and the increased ability of personnel to process the applications.
“We changed some people’s jobs around to help out,” Grice said. “We had one person primarily doing it, and she was behind, so we hired a part-time person to roll fingerprints. This, and other changes, have put us in a better position.”
According to Grice, residents can save time during the process by downloading the application from the county website at www.co.davidson.nc.us /sheriff/default.aspx, before arriving at the office.
“This saves the person time, and they do not have to sit there and fill out a lengthy application when they come in,” Grice said.
