Mother, son died in boating accident
Authorities have released the names of the mother and child killed when two boats collided on High Rock Lake in Davidson County.
Investigators said Melissa Chambers Britt, 32, and her 3-year-old son, William Jaiden Britt, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday from a boating accident on High Rock Lake in Davidson County.
William died at the hospital a short time after the crash around 12:30 p.m. Saturday. His mother, Melissa, was found dead in the lake a few hours later.
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission said that a speed boat crashed into a pontoon boat. Both victims were on the pontoon boat along with Michael Chambers and William Clayborn Britt Jr., 33.
Michael Chambers was taken to Lexington Hospital for multiple fractures and internal injuries.
No one on the speed boat was hurt.
Michael Greene, 52, has been named as the driver of the speed boat. No criminal charges have been filed, but the investigation continues.
Investigators plan to meet with prosecutors in a few days to determine if any charges should be filed. Officials say the powerboat was going well over 25 mph in a shallow portion of the lake near Linwood.
