Thomasville Medical Center is offering some of its special patients a moment of pampering and relaxation, despite the rough time that they may going through.
Beginning Jan. 18, the center will offer its Feel Good Friday program, designed for cancer patients.
“We will not have any lectures and give them a chance to be in a happy atmosphere and network with other cancer patients in a whole new atmosphere,” said Elizabeth Parnell, oncology program coordinator. “We are hoping that it provides a happy atmosphere where people can enjoy themselves and pick up information in the community. This is there time to do what they want to do for those four hours.”
Once a month, on the third Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., community volunteers come in to give haircuts, hair care advice and manicures as well as craft making. The goal of the program is to provide cancer patients a time to relax and possibly forget about their disease for a few hours.
“The program has been  at Forsyth Regional Cancer Center, another Novant health facility, for about 10 years. When Thomasville placed me into my position, I felt that this is something that we could do for our community,” Parnell said. “We have implemented the program here. We go out and find volunteers in the community who will be willing to provide their free services to cancer patients and their caregivers. The community feedback has been very supportive, and we are hoping for a wonderful turnout.”
The program is free to cancer patients and their favorite caregiver, whether its a spouse, parent or a friend. Parnell said they wanted to include the caregivers because they are often overlooked while focusing on the patient.
“We want to make sure they are involved along with the patient. Also, some of the patients are not able to get to the hospital by themselves,” Parnell said. “We want to make sure the caregiver is not waiting by themselves while the patient is pampered. We want them to enjoy themselves too.”
There is lunch and door prizes provided.
