A manufacturer of gelatin capsules will expand its operation east of Greensboro and add 123 new jobs, the second major expansion and major employment announcement by a Guilford County company this week.

Qualicaps Inc. will add the new jobs and invest more than $26 million during the next three years at its facility in Whitsett in eastern Guilford County, local and state officials announced Friday. The company received pledges of economic incentives totaling $507,805 — $272,805 from Guilford County and $235,000 from the state of North Carolina, according to the Greensboro Economic Development Alliance.
“Salaries for the new jobs vary by job function, but will average $37,785,” the alliance indicates.
Qualicaps already employs 160 employees in the county, according to the alliance. The Whitsett operation serves as the company’s North American headquarters and manufacturing hub, reports the office of Gov. Pat McCrory.
Earlier this week, UnitedHealthcare announced it would create 500 jobs at its Greensboro operation. The new UnitedHealthcare jobs will focus on customer service and handling health care claims.
While neither of the announcements this week are in High Point, the developments bode well for the area as a whole, said Peter Summers, assistant professor of economics at High Point University.
The expansions by Qualicaps and UnitedHealthcare may reflect a general improvement in the business climate and confidence by employers about the pace of the economic recovery. But the announcements also highlight the business atmosphere in Guilford County, Summers told The High Point Enterprise.
“Even though these businesses aren’t in High Point, they’d certainly be jobs, potentially, that High Point residents may end up filling,” Summers said. “And it will add to overall economic activity in the county and region, which will send a good signal to others thinking of opening up or expanding their operations in the area.” | 888-3528
