Airport goes high-tech - on the ground
The Piedmont Triad Airport Authority is installing electronic vehicle charging stations at the airport — devices that should be in full operation by August.
Piedmont Triad International Airport has purchased eight charging stations that it is installing on level two of the parking garage and in both employee lots. The stations are for use by airport patrons and employees who drive electric vehicles. The charging stations will initially be available at no extra charge on a first-come, first-served basis.
“We see the installation of these charging stations as an opportunity to anticipate the needs of our passengers as the technology of their lives evolves,” said PTIA Executive Director Kevin Baker. “We are seeing an increase in the number of electric vehicles in our parking decks.”
The charging stations will allow passengers to charge their cars while they are away on business or vacation.
“In much the same way as we provide charging stations, USB ports, touch screen devices and free Wi-Fi inside the terminal building, we see this as a way of accommodating the public’s move to fuel efficient, electric vehicles,” Baker said. “It is an added convenience.”
The Airport Authority is installing eight charging stations and will monitor their use. If more charging stations are needed, they will be added as demand warrants.
