'Tea and Fashion' fundraiser to benefit Shakespeare Festival

Jun. 10, 2013 @ 03:43 PM

An upcoming fundraiser for the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival will feature a formal afternoon tea and a show of fashions from humanity’s earliest times.
“Tea and Fashion: The Ancients — Fashions from the Cradle of Civilization” will take place June 22, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., at the NCShakes Spirit Center, 807 W. Ward Ave.
The fashion program, taking place in William Shakespeare Hall, features looks from ancient Egypt, Assyria, Persia, Crete, Greece, Rome and China. Community volunteers will model costumes and accessories from the collections of the NCShakes Costume Shop and Appalachian State University.
Attendees will then enjoy a selection of teas served with miniature cucumber sandwiches, muffins, scones, cream puffs and other treats in Queen Elizabeth Hall.
Table hosts, who will decorate each table, include J.H. Adams Inn, Antique and Vintage Furnishings, CornerStone Interiors, High Point Jewelers and Fine Gifts, Thomasville Emporium Antique Mall and Side Street Café, Paper and Party Place, and community volunteers. Vintage clothing, jewelry and accessories from the NCShakes collection will also be available for sale.
Additionally, a raffle drawing will award prizes including a sterling silver and 18-karat gold mother-of-pearl necklace from Simon Jewelers. Raffle tickets are $5 apiece (or six for $25) and may be purchased at the event or in advance. Winners must be present to win.
Seating is limited, and reservations may be made by June 17 by calling the NCShakes administrative offices at 841-2273. Tickets are $50 each, half of which is tax-deductible.
Proceeds will benefit the festival’s numerous outreach and education programs, including the annual statewide “Shakespeare To Go” tour; SummerStage camps and workshops for children and adults; the new Youth Theatre program; Hands On Shakespeare educator workshops; Fest For All need-based scholarships and reduced ticket pricing; and free “Classics in Context” talks at each production.
Last year’s “Tea and Fashion” fundraiser, which highlighted the Renaissance era, raised more than $8,000 for the education program.
