High Point brothers reach finals of Folgers jingle contest
For High Point brothers Zach and Marcus Cox, the best part of waking up may be a new Folgers commercial in their cup.
Performing with their longtime friend, Sawyer Frye of Winston-Salem, the musical brothers have reached the finals of a national jingle contest sponsored by the iconic coffee company. Should they win, the trio will receive $25,000, plus the possibility of having their jingle featured in a Folgers commercial.
“We were surprised,” Marcus Cox, 20, said of being named one of 10 finalists in the competition. “We thought ours was good, but we never expected it to be in the top 10. We’re the only finalists from North Carolina and even from the South, which really surprised us because there’s a lot of musical talent in North Carolina.”
According to Folgers, the 10 finalists were chosen based on creativity and originality, musical performance, and adherence to the creative assignment.
The Cox brothers and Frye, who all work for a local landscaping company, have been making music together for a long time.
“We’ve always had this musical connection,” Marcus said. “Every time we hang out together on the weekend, we’ll pull out our instruments and sit by a campfire and make music. We love jamming together.”
For the jingle contest, the group was required to record a music video of an original song, 60 to 90 seconds long, that concludes with the well-known Folgers jingle, “The best part of wakin’ up is Folgers in your cup.”
The trio came up with a folksy, roots-driven jingle — similar to the type of music they like to play most when they get together — that features Frye playing guitar, Zach Cox playing the dulcimer and Marcus Cox playing the djembe, which is an African drum played with the hands. Frye sings the lyrics, with the brothers harmonizing with him at the end.
They recorded the music video at a friend’s farm in Kernersville, and Frye did the final editing before submitting their entry.
“It’s catchy and it’s high-energy, and we’re all three musicians, so you can hear a fully produced song,” said Frye, 25. “And in the video itself, you can see the connection we have because we’re such great friends. I think that’s one of the things that made it stand out.”
The 10 finalists are posted on a website where fans can vote once a day through June 19 to help determine the winner.
“We’re just trying to get as many people to vote for us as we can,” said Zach Cox, 25. “We’re the only finalist from North Carolina and we’ve got a lot of state pride, so we’re trying to get people from all over the state to vote for us.”
