Scholarships available for annual Go Red luncheon

Dec. 27, 2013 @ 03:19 PM

The American Heart Association’s Guilford Go Red For Women campaign is hosting its third annual, one-of-a-kind “Make It Your Mission” scholarship program, with the goal of giving women the chance to learn about their personal risk factors for heart disease and to understand the changes they can make to prevent heart disease.
Two-hundred scholarships are available for women who would like to attend the Guilford Go Red Educational Expo and Luncheon, but cannot afford to pay the $100 ticket price.
The event is scheduled for May 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
All scholarship recipients will also receive free, customized heart-health assessments, courtesy of Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center.
In 2012, 300 women attended the first Guilford Go Red event, 65 of them on scholarship. This year, over 600 women attended, 200 of them on scholarship.
In 2014, more than 700 women are expected to attend the event, with at least 200 on scholarship. Scholarships are funded by the generous donations of local Circle of Red and Red Tie Society members and corporate supporters who want to share the Go Red For Women message with women across the community.
All Guilford County women, as well as those from Alamance, Rockingham, Randolph, Davidson and Davie counties, are invited to nominate themselves — or their mothers, daughters, friends and co-workers — for a scholarship. Nomination forms are available at www.heart.org/guilfordncgoredluncheon. You can also get the form by emailing Eleanor Schaffner-Mosh at EleanorSMosh@mac.com or by calling her at (336) 209-2269.
Scholarship nominations must be submitted by Jan. 25, and recipients will be notified by Jan. 31.
The Guilford Go Red For Women Educational Expo and Luncheon will be a day of celebration, education and support. Attendees will:
•Participate in breakout sessions focused on various aspects of heart health.
•Learn about their personal risk factors for heart disease at a health fair.
•Learn strategies for managing stress and enjoying themselves at a boutique.
•Bid on purses as part of the “Red Hot Purse-a-nality” Silent Auction.
•Celebrate the 2014 Guilford Go Red Search winners, local women who have survived heart disease or taken action to become healthier.
•Enjoy a heart-healthy luncheon with dynamic speakers and some surprises.
All funds raised through the Guilford Go Red For Women Educational Expo and Luncheon benefit heart disease research and prevention education for women.  For every dollar raised by the American Heart Association in North Carolina, $1.20 comes back to this state.
