Spin 4 Life fundraiser to help in fight against cancer

As many as 600 indoor cyclists are expected to participate in this weekend’s Spin 4 Life, an annual fundraiser benefiting children and families battling cancer.
“This is just my way of giving something back to the community,” says Mark Snyder, a cancer survivor who organizes Spin 4 Life, now in its sixth year. “It’s become a great event.”
This year’s event will be held Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Brinkley Gymnasium, located on the campus of Davidson County Community College in Thomasville.
The five-hour, indoor ride on spin bikes is coached by instructors with music, and teams of one to five riders can participate. Riders must arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the ride or segment, and a team member must be on the bike at all times with a 30-minute minimum; if a team member is not there to switch, the rider must continue until a team member arrives to take over. Instructors will allow a five-minute break for bathroom stops or rider change-outs.
The theme for this year’s event is “Keeping the Dreams Alive,” with a goal of promoting good health and well-being through a fun exercise program.
“We wanted this to be an event to get everyone involved in their own health and well-being,” Snyder says. “We wanted to encourage even people that only thought they could spin for 10 minutes to begin a lifelong quest to improve their overall fitness levels.”
The cost is $28 per person, which includes light snacks and a T-shirt. Proceeds will go to Carolina Cancer Services, Kisses4Kate and the American Cancer Society.
Last year’s Spin 4 Life raised nearly $20,000, according to Snyder.
Saturday’s event will also include a “Be the Match” bone marrow drive.
