'Dylan's Diaper Doozie' benefits Pregnancy Care Center

You’ll have to forgive 5-year-old Dylan Shaw for wearing a diaper on his head. He’s finishing up a project that’s been extremely, um, absorbing.
Since July 1, Dylan has been collecting diapers and money — used to purchase more diapers — for the Pregnancy Care Center of High Point. He calls his project “Dylan’s Diaper Doozie.”
Tugging his little red wagon behind him — and wearing that eye-catching “diaper hat” on his head — Dylan went door to door in his High Point neighborhood and adjacent neighborhoods, soliciting donations of diapers and dollars. He also pitched his project to the Sunday school class of his parents, Bryan and Tori Shaw, at Green Street Baptist Church.
“Our Sunday school class has done some service projects at the Pregnancy Care Center, and Dylan loved helping us,” Tori says. “When we heard that they needed diapers, he wanted to help raise money for diapers. Out of nowhere, he had markers and wagons and paper, and he called it ‘Dylan’s Diaper Doozie.’ ”
Dylan’s initial goal was to raise $100, but it didn’t take him long to get there. The first day, he collected $80.16 — plus four diapers.
“He said, ‘If I get to $100, I’ll wear a diaper all day,’ ” Tori recalls.
By July 4, he had reached his goal and actually wore two diapers that day — one on his bottom and the other on his head.
“A lot of people were amazed with his little speech he gave, and they were very generous,” Tori says. “A lot of people said, ‘I’m gonna give you money just because you’re wearing that diaper hat.’ ”
Then family friend Jordan Stowe raised the stakes even higher.
“If you get to $500,” he told Dylan, “then I’ll wear an adult diaper all day.”
Better go shopping for Depends, sir. As of noon Thursday, the total had reached $548.
“Dylan is soooo excited,” Tori says. “He can’t wait.”
According to the Shaws, the family will host a yard sale and lemonade stand Saturday, with some of the yard sale proceeds and all of the lemonade proceeds going toward “Dylan’s Diaper Doozie.”
They plan to deliver Dylan’s diapers and dollars to the Pregnancy Care Center on Monday, Tori says.
According to Dylan’s mom, helping others comes naturally to him.
“This is his nature,” she says. “He wants to be the hands and feet of Christ — he says that a lot. He just loves helping other people — he has a very gentle spirit and a giving attitude.”
