Gala, silent auction to benefit Theatre Art Galleries

The importance of the visual arts will take center stage next week when Theatre Art Galleries hosts its annual TAG Gala and Art Auction.
“This is our largest fundraiser of the year, and it will help support our education programs,” said Jeff Horney, executive director of the nonprofit visual art organization. “We have an obligation to fulfill our mission of education, and this gala helps us accomplish that.”
The event, which will include a silent auction and raffle, live jazz, heavy hors d’oeuvres and a full bar, will be held May 3 at the home of Condon and Scott Smith.
The deadline to RSVP is Friday.
“We’re going to have probably close to 150 pieces of original art from more than 50 artists — many of them new to TAG — available through our silent auction,” Horney said.
“...I’ve been touched by the generosity of the artists who contributed their work. A lot of them have no connection to TAG, but they donated work just because they want to support the visual arts.”
One such artist is Hilda Spain of Charlotte, who paints with acrylics and contributed four of her works for the silent auction.
“I think (TAG) does a lot to support artists and the arts in general, and I wanted to help because of that,” Spain said.
The silent auction will also include a number of other items, such as trips, stays at vacation homes, gift certificates and more, Horney said.
There will also be a raffle for “The Path,” a 36-by-36-inch acrylic painting by artist Catherine C. Martin. The painting has a $1,500 retail value. Raffle tickets cost $15 apiece, or $100 for 10.
According to Horney, the funds raised will help fund a fulltime education coordinator for the organization (TAG currently has someone working on a parttime basis); help pay for TAG’s summer camps and provide camp scholarships for those who can’t afford them; and help expand TAG’s outreach into the schools and other nonprofits.
“We’re optimistic that this is going to be a great event, and we’re excited about how it’s going to help our art education program,” he said.
