Third-grade girl's super essay may win her some super prizes

Andy Eder may not be a real superhero, but he is in the eyes of his 9-year-old daughter, Cora.
And that may be enough for Cora, a home-schooled third-grader from High Point, to win a prize from the world’s leading expert on superheroes, DC Comics.
Cora is one of five national finalists in the “Be a Super Hero. Read!” writing competition, sponsored by DC Comics, the creator of such superheroes as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.
“They said to write about a hero, and I picked Daddy,” Cora said of her essay.
Cora wrote that her dad, an officer with the Greensboro Police Department — and an Army veteran who was deployed to Iraq in 2003 and 2005 — is a real-life hero because he not only looks after his family, but takes care of people, too.
“He is a crime fighter, catching criminals so he can save all the good people in the city,” she wrote. “He’s smart, honest and brave, like a super hero. ... He is my hero because it’s a dangerous job, but he loves helping people.”
The winning essay will be chosen through an online vote that will continue through Monday, with the winner being announced May 30.
Cora won $150 worth of books just for being named a finalist. If she wins the grand prize, she’ll get a VIP trip for four to California, where she’ll receive an exclusive tour of DC Entertainment offices — the home of Superman and Batman — as well as a tour of the Warner Brothers Animation Studios and a $2,500 charitable donation to the cause of her dad’s choice.
Andy Eder said Cora’s essay touched him deeply.
“It’s always nice to hear your kids say ‘I love you,’” he said, “but when you read how they feel about you, that’s a whole different thing.”
