New comedy club to open in High Point this weekend

The laughs will be downtown this weekend, when the High Point Plaza Hotel and Conference Center launches its new venue for standup comedians, the Joke Factory Comedy Club.
The club will make its debut Friday and Saturday nights, with performances by nationally known comedian Artie Fletcher.
“Artie is the bad boy of New York City comedy – that’s kind of his nickname,” said Bob Hietala, senior vice president of hotel operations for Inner Circle US, the real estate investment and management firm that owns the High Point Plaza. “He’s performed for us at other clubs we’ve owned, and he has a very good following. He pretty much sells out the show every time he performs.”
Fletcher has made dozens of television appearances – including performances with David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, and Regis & Kathie Lee – and has been featured in numerous television commercials and films. Known as a no-holds-barred comic, Fletcher has been a standup comedian for more than 25 years, performing at comedy clubs across the country, as well as Radio City Music Hall and venues in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
“He has been a hit across the country, and we know that his entertaining style is the perfect way to introduce the Joke Factory Comedy Club to the region,” Hietala said. “And then after Artie, we’ve got comedians lined up for the next eight to 10 weeks already.”
Other comedians on the calendar include Keith Purnell, Traci Kanaan and hypnotist/comedian Gary Conrad.
According to Hietala, the comedy club is part of Inner Circle’s efforts to improve the downtown hotel, which the company purchased in July.
“We think this will be a good generator for activity at the hotel,” he said. “It gets people to our property and gives people something else to do in downtown High Point. There’s a good buzz going on. I think people are glad to see that the new ownership of the property is doing some things with it that will generate interest in the property.”
Initially, the Joke Factory will feature one show every Friday and Saturday night.
“But if we get what we want in our turnout, we’ll end up having two shows each night,” Hietala said.
The Joke Factory is located in the hotel’s newly renovated bistro and lounge, which features new woodwork and paneling. The club will seat about 80, according to Hietala.
Inner Circle officials said the comedy club is one of a number of changes taking place at the hotel.
“We believe in the potential that this downtown hotel can provide to the city of High Point,” said Stephen Nalley, managing partner of Inner Circle. “And this new comedy club gives residents one more reason to be proud of their downtown core.”
