Plane crashes in Winston-Salem

Two people died after a small plane crashed in Winston-Salem on Sunday afternoon, FAA officials said.

Fire officials said the plane crashed around 12:50 p.m. in a wooded area near the 900 block of Kearns Ave., near Robinhood Road. Firefighters said the plane didn't hit any houses.

The light weight, composite plane was a Lancair with identification number 6506L, according to WXII's Stephanie Berzinski.

Smith Reynolds Airport officials said the plane was on its way to Washington, N.C., when the pilot reported engine trouble and their intention to try and land at Smith Reynolds.

The FAA will investigate the crash.

No other information has been released.
