James Stephens III
HIGH POINT — James Stephens III passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, January 21, 2013, at Moses Cone Hospital after a brief illness. He was the son of Jim and Joyce Stephens and Jack and Cheryll Willson. James celebrated his 40th birthday on September 11, 2012, with family and friends.
James was a graduate of High Point Central High School and attended GTCC. He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and was very active in the youth program. For 17 years, James was employed as a back-desk attendant at the Hartley Drive YMCA. Working at the YMCA was a wonderful experience for James. He loved to joke with the members, and he took great pride in giving members their favorite locker or “wrinkled towels” if that was what they wanted. He was a dedicated employee and a friend to everyone he met there.
On June 1, 2011, James moved to Bell House in Greensboro where he made friends and enjoyed some Special activities — most importantly, the opportunity to participate in karaoke. He loved to sing his favorite songs, he loved to do impressions of famous people, he loved to play “all-night canasta matches with Joyce and Dad,” he loved his brother and sister-in-law so much, he loved his friends and family, and he loved the sweet but feisty family pet, Buffy.
The family would like to thank the YMCA staff and members for the many kindnesses shown to James over the years and the way in which he was made to feel like “family.” That same “family” feeling was present at Bell House. The staff and residents welcomed James from the first day, and we are grateful for the care he received. The family would also like to gratefully acknowledge the kind and compassionate care James received at Moses Cone Hospital from the many doctors, nurses and volunteers who helped all of us during the last two weeks.
James was preceded in death by his mother, Cheryll Stephens Willson, and stepfather Jack Willson. He is survived by Jim and Joyce Stephens, brother and sister-in-law Joey and Katelyn Stephens, aunt and uncle Julie and David Lindsay, uncle Jody McGhee, cousins Chris, Laura, Robyn, and Taylor Powers, and Ali and Nick Lindsay.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with visitation following in the Asbury Room of the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bell House (www.belihouseinc.org).2400 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC, 27405, or Muscular Dystrophy Association, 2306 W. Meadowview Rd., Greensboro, NC 27407.
Online condolences may be made on James’ memorial page at www.cumbyfuneral.com Arrangements by Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.
