Charlie Boyles

HIGH POINT — Mr. Charles (Charlie) Bulla Boyles, 81, resident of High Point, died January 13, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Mr. Boyles was born June 8, 1931, in Randolph County, a son of the late Roba and Myrtle Coltrane Boyles. A resident of this area most of his life, he had served as vice president of Griffin Upholstery and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Fairfield United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher and was active in the choir and Men’s Club. He also sang with the Fairfield Quartet, Soldiers Again and Led By Him. In 1953 he married the former Shirley Griffin, who survives of the residence. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Taylor Angel; and two brothers, Roba Boyles Jr. and Leon Boyles.

Also surviving are two daughters, Christy Angel and husband Kim of High Point, and Lisa Kiser and husband Curt of Archdale; one son, Chuck Boyles and wife Missy of Archdale; one brother, Jerry Boyles and wife Dyanne of Archdale; eight grandchildren, Nick Kiser and wife Haley, Marcus Kiser and wife Aislynn, Spenser Angel, Wesley Boyles, Sarah Boyles, Ben Henson, Abby Henson and Jayne Henson; and three great-grandchildren, Charlee Kiser, Sawyer Kiser and Willow Kiser.

Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Fairfield United Methodist Church with Rev. Jill Auman, Rev. Keith Auman, Dr. Tim Porter and Rev. Gene Dean officiating. A private interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the church fellowship hall. Harold Burgess

ARCHDALE — Harold Wayne Burgess, 72, of Archdale, passed away Friday, January 11, 2013. He was born June 29, 1940, to James Harold Burgess and Flossie Tucker Burgess in High Point. He married the late Carole Rose Burgess and together they had two children. He retired from the Navy as Chief Petty Officer.

Besides his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his wife Carole Rose Burgess and his son Harold Wayne Burgess Jr. Survivors include his daughter, Joni Whittington and her husband James “Jimmy” of Archdale; brother, Charles Edward Burgess of Liberty; sister, Toby Johnston of Orlando, FL; two grandsons, Shane Whittington and his wife Erin of Archdale and Dakota Wayne Burgess of Archdale; and two great-grandchildren, Tyson and Sydney.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Sechrest Funeral Service in Archdale. Burial will follow at Oakwood Memorial in High Point. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Phillip Gunter

ARCHDALE — Mr. Phillip Hobson Gunter, 76, resident of Archdale, died January 13, 2013, at Rowan Regional Hospital.

Mr. Gunter was born June 13, 1936, in Stokes County, a son of the late Dewey and Beulah Lavender Gunter. A resident of this area most of his life, he was owner of Phillip’s Custom Upholstery and was of the Baptist faith. He also was a disabled U.S. Air Force veteran having served in the Korean War. In 1956 he married the former Madie Hill, who survives of the residence.

Also surviving are two sons, Steven Michael Gunter and wife Donna of Archdale, and Phillip Ray Gunter and wife Cathy of Thomasville; a brother, Donald Ray Gunter of Missouri; two sisters, Peggy Whitt of Charlotte and Janet Gunter of Atlanta; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be announced for a later date.

LEXINGTON — Larry Vernon Jarvis, 70, of NC Highway 47, died Monday, January 14, 2013, at his home. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at Cedar Grove Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home.


Sandra Maxwell

LEXINGTON — Sandra Gail West Maxwell went to be with the Lord on January 13, 2013, after several years of battling cancer. She passed while at the Hinkle House in Davidson County. She was a volunteer for Hospice for many years and also gave her services to Meals on Wheels. She was born in Kinston, North Carolina, to Oliver and Alma West. She was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Lexington.

She is survived by her husband Greg Sowers; and two children, John Sneed and wife Kristy of Wilmington, Kimberly Magee and husband Billy of Lexington. She loved her grandchildren strongly and is survived by six of them, Tyler Allison, Trey Sneed, Hannah Magee, Christian Sneed, Cody Magee, Andrew Sneed.

She is also survived by siblings Earl West and wife Marie of Prince George, Va, Ray West and wife Brenda of Elgin, SC, Lynwood West and Judy of Archdale, NC, Doug West and wife Kris of Sweetwater, Tenn., Danny West and wife Pam of Greensboro, NC, Jean English and husband June of Moncks Corner, SC. She was preceded in life by a brother Edward West.

She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

By her wishes, she was cremated. There will be visitation for friends and family on Friday, January 18, 2013, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Lexington located on Highway 64. After visitation there will be a memorial service in the sanctuary at 6:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Davidson County in memory of Sandi Maxwell.

Suzanne Mellberg

Shirley McCloud Phillips

HIGH POINT — Mrs. Shirley Ann McCloud Phillips, 72,  daughter of the late Jack McCloud and Elizabeth Graham Pickett,  was born on August 16, 1940, in High Point, NC. On Friday, January 11, 2013, Shirley peacefully made the transition to everlasting life.

Shirley was a graduate of William Penn High School Class of 1958. She attended North Carolina Central University where she majored in Business administration. She was employed by the High Point City School System and Guilford County School System. During her years of employment she served as secretary at various schools. After 30 years of service she retired.

She was a devoted Christian and faithful member of First Emmanuel Baptist Church where she gave freely of her time and talent. She was a member of the Senior Usher Board #2 where she served as treasurer for many years and received numerous awards during her lifetime. She could often be seen working in the kitchen and doing whatever else she could in service to her church.

Shirley was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was loved by her countless friends, her fellow church members and especially her family.

Survivors who will cherish her memory include her husband of 53 years, Willie G. Phillips of the home; one daughter, Cassandra Torrence of High Point, NC; one son, Dwayne Phillips of Winston-Salem, NC; three grandchildren, Terrez Phillips, Krishna Torrence and Jessica Phillips; one great-grandson, Zayden Fox-Phillips; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at First Emmanuel Baptist Church, 831 Leonard Avenue. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 until 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park, Greensboro, NC.

LEXINGTON — Barbara Jean Sutton, 46, of Roy Lopp Road, died Jan. 13, 2013, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holly Grove Lutheran Church.


Margie Church Warrell

THOMASVILLE — Mrs. Margie Church Warrell, age 73, passed away January 13 at her residence.

Mrs. Warrell was born in Watauga County on April 14, 1939, to Roe and Blanche Cheek Church. She was a devoted homemaker and wife and loved being “Mama” and “Mawmaw” to her family. Mrs. Warrell and her husband enjoyed their participation in the Furniture Land Chapter of A.A.C.A. She was of the Methodist faith. Mrs. Warrell was preceeded in death by her parents, her son, SFC David Warrell in 1995 and by her sister, Genna Gaye Wilcox. On November 14, 1959, she married Carl Warrell, who survives of the home.

Also surviving are one daughter, Dana Hall and husband Steve of Thomasville; and one son, Eddie Warrell and wife Tammy of Denton. There are four grandchildren, Marty and Conlee and Samantha and Austin. Mrs. Warrell has three sisters, Myrtle, Janice, and Joyce; and five brothers; William, Kendrick, Wendell, Carris and Royce.

Funeral services for Mrs. Warrell will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Sechrest Funeral Service in High Point by the Rev. Jeff Burton and Rev. James Sechrest. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Charlie Wilson

HIGH POINT — Mr. Charlie B. Wilson, age 66 of High Point, NC, departed this earthly life on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Hospice Home at High Point. He was born on October 20, 1946, to Charlie “Took” Wilson and Lucinda Bernice Cobbs Wilson.

“Charlie B,” as he was affectionately called, was educated in Dillon County public schools. He was united in marriage to the former Ellander “Ella” Bethea. After relocating to High Point, he was employed with Highland Yarns. Although he received a limited education, Charlie B. Wilson preceded to become a successful business owner of a prominent landscaping company.

Charlie B. was a dedicated husband, a very loving father, a hard worker and a fun-spirited person who was loved by many.

The loved ones he rejoins who preceded him in death include his wife of 32 years, Ella Bethea Wilson; his parents, a daughter, Tashia Watts; a grandson, Omar Watts; four brothers, Willie Cobbs, John H. Wilson, Luther Wilson and James Wilson; two sisters, Ola Mae Baker and Terease Wilson.

He leaves to cherish his memories three sons, Vashon D. Wilson, Montegues O. Wilson and Minister Lavorice (Kimberly) Smith; one daughter, Kimmy D. (Ernest) Perry; seven grandchildren; four brothers, Robert (Evg. Lousie) Wilson, Vernon Wilson, Edward (Evg. Cynthia) Wilson and Clyde Wilson, all of High Point; six sisters, Annie R. (Pete) Carmichael, Joyce (Pastor James) Casey, Elizabeth (Calvin) Bryant, Patricia (Jerry) Malloy all of High Point, Polly F. Wilson of Black Mountain, NC, and Carol (Jackie Lee) Alford of Marion, SC; a special and devoted friend, Norma “Joyce” Mitchell, her children and her grandchildren; great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law; a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends although not named, you where very special to him.

Home-going celebration will commence 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at Living Water Baptist Church. Family visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m.-2:00 p.m. at the church.
