High Point University offered a Christmas festival to residents who came out for a quick stroll Wednesday night.

“We are really excited. We wanted to raise it up a notch and make sure the entire city knew that we wanted them to be apart of this event,” said Don Scarborough, vice president for community relations. “The attendance will ensure that we will make this an annual event. We are High Point University and we want people to know that they are free to come to our campus. We wanted to demonstrate that with this particular program. When people come on campus and feel comfortable, they will come back.”

The event is free and open to public today from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. This will be a rain or shine event.

Attendees enjoyed carriage rides, athletic giveaways, local choirs singing, and hot chocolate and cookies along the Kester International Promenade. There was an area set up for children that included faux snow, a bounce house and Santa Claus in the Hayworth Fine Arts Center.

“Talking to Santa was nice,” said Myae Rodriguez, 7, of Greensboro. “I told him that I wanted a puppy. I like this event a lot and my favorite part was going on the carriage ride.”

Jimmy Rojas, 6, of High Point, also enjoyed his trip to the HPU Christmas celebration.

“My favorite part was taking a picture with Santa Claus,” Rojas said. “I also liked the carriage ride.”

Megan Kihlman and her husband, Mattias, brought their 1-year-old son and 2-week-old daughter out to enjoy the festivities.

“We came out tonight so that our son could enjoy all of the activities,” Kihlman said. “It means a lot to our family to do community activities. I think that it is nice that HPU is opening their campus to the community.”
